Urvashi Sharma has joined the list of Bollywood actors who have been turning to the small screen as judges, hosts or even lead characters in daily shows. Best remembered for her debut film Naqaab, Urvashi took a break after her marriage. She is now set to make a comeback on small screen, debuting in Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma. Speaking to us about her role, Urvashi says, “Amma is a 52-episode series wherein I am essaying the title role of a single mother who becomes a female don after she is deserted by her husband during one of the darkest phases of Indian history — the partition. Facing all the adversities, she carves a path for herself and attains an identity of her own in a world dominated by intimidating men.”For the first time, Urvashi will be seen in a de-glam avatar, and the actor has gone to lengths to prepare for the role. She didn’t even mind putting on weight to play the character. “I am a mother in real life too. As an actor, I always make sure that I completely get into the skin of my character. Be it putting on weight or going de-glam, I am fine with it. I play a Muslim character, so I had to work a little more on my dialogues and accent.
I feel blessed to have landed such a strong role for my television debut.” Notably, Urvashi has appeared in various television advertisements and has featured in Mika Singh’s music video, Something Something. What made her decide to take to the small screen then? “Amma’s character is a very strong role. With strong will power. She knows how to deal with tough situations. All this influenced me to take up the show. Today, television has a wide reach. Doing a film will create an impact for a while, but when you are on the small screen, it’s has an everyday connect. Television has emerged a strong medium and we cannot underestimate its power. It has reach in each and every household,” she says. Urvashi feels that television demands hectic working hours as compared to film as a medium. “Television demands a lot of time and commitment. We have hectic shooting schedules and it can be challenging. But I am blessed to have a husband like Sachin, who has always been supportive. Thanks to him, I am able to manage my family and work simultaneously,” she signs off.
